JAMB Raises Concern Over Verification of Direct Entry Results

Concern has been raised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board  over certain institutions’ failure to confirm the results that applicants, especially those submitting applications for direct entry (DE) admissions, submit. The board has emphasized that its screening procedure is intended to guarantee that only valid credentials are recognized, according to a report released by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Bulletin on Monday.

Screening Process and Institutional Responsibility

The board emphasized that the admitting institutions bear the primary obligation for verification.

Bayero University Kano Uncovers Widespread Certificate Forgery

JAMB is worried after Bayero University in Kano made the startling discovery that only six of the 148 results it checked for admission were authentic. It was discovered that the remaining certificates were fake.

Previous Cases of Forged A-Level Results

During a DE registration season in 2023, JAMB also discovered 1,665 forged A-level results.

Introduction of NIPEDS for Result Verification

In response to such issues, the board introduced the Nigeria Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (NIPEDS) to facilitate the verification of A-level qualifications, including those from foreign institutions.

Detection of Additional Fraudulent Certificates

According to the report, the system has already detected several instances of forgery, and 13 more A-level certificates were recently found to be fraudulent.

Use of Fake Credentials in University Admissions

According to JAMB, before they were discovered, several universities had already used these falsified documents to conduct admissions for applicants.

Legal Action Against Offenders

The impacted persons, the board stated, have been sent to law enforcement agencies for prosecution.

Warning to Institutions on Fraudulent Admissions

JAMB warned that institutions admitting candidates based on fraudulent credentials would be considered complicit in the malpractice.

JAMB’s Call for Thorough Verification of A-Level Credentials

The board emphasized that institutions are still required to perform their own due diligence and that NIPEDS is merely a useful verification tool. In an effort to be admitted to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), candidates submitted fictitious results from the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE) in one of the most serious forgery cases, the board said. Whether issued by their own institution or by another, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board encouraged all higher education institutions to thoroughly verify A-level credentials.
