WAEC Kicks Off 2025 May/June Exams with 1.97 Million Candidates Nationwide!
Beginning on Thursday, April 24, 2025, 1,973,253 SS3 students nationwide will take the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). They come from 23,554 government-approved and private secondary schools nationwide, and they are made up of 979,228 males (49.63%) and 994,025 females (50.37%), representing a 158,627 increase in candidates over the previous year.
In a similar vein, 90 days following the results announcement, candidates will be able to pick up their diplomas from their individual institutions for free.
Additionally, because of documented instances of misconduct during the previous edition, 574 schools nationwide are prohibited from submitting candidates for this exam.
This was revealed Thursday at a news conference at WAEC’s headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, by Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC Nigeria’s National Office.
He declared that WAEC is ready to examine without any problems and that all necessary procedures and safeguards have been in place to guarantee this.
Dangut added that the test will be conducted in all 36 of the federation’s states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and regions that frequently face security threats.
He stated that to provide sufficient protection for test takers, exam personnel, and exam materials throughout the exam time, WAEC has approached the Nigeria Police Force and other pertinent security organizations for cooperation. These agencies have told WAEC that they are prepared, he continued.
Dangut denounced exam cheating but cautioned all applicants, managers, instructors, schools, administrators, parents, and particularly those running questionable websites against participating.
He underlined that any person, organization, or institution found to be supporting or participating in malpractice would be subject to the full force of the law and that WAEC would not provide any loopholes for it.
He emphasized that any candidate who decides to write a different paper than the one that has been assigned to them will be doing themselves a harm and will be held accountable.
Dangut further underlined that questions will not have the same number and that WAEC will not create questions that are not related to the syllabus. For this reason, he advised students to prepare well for the test.
WAEC has made previous exam questions and marking guidelines available online for candidates to read to aid in their preparation.
He ended by wishing the candidates luck and saying he was sure they would succeed if they had enough preparation.
