WAEC Goes Digital! First-Ever CBT Exam Set for 2 Million Candidates Nationwide

The first-ever computer-based test (CBT) edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school students will be administered in Nigeria to 1.97 million candidates, according to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Compared to its first rollout for private candidates in 2024, when 8,285 people took the first round of the computer-based test, this represents a substantial expansion.
This was revealed by Amos Dangut, the head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, at a news conference on Thursday at the council’s national office in Yaba, Lagos.
According to Mr. Dangut, the first-ever CBT WASSCE will take place nationwide from Thursday, April 24, to Friday, June 20.
He disclosed that 1,973,253 kids from 23,554 schools around the country will take the test. Of this total, 994,025 are female (50.37 percent) and 979,228 are male (49.63 percent), suggesting that female participation is still on the rise.
The test will consist of 196 papers in 74 subjects, and more than 26,000 senior high school teachers will be participating as supervisors around the country.
The necessity of CBT
Mr. Dangut claims that the purpose of the digital tests is to fight rampant misconduct and enhance the integrity of the evaluation process.

“This initiative is in line with the Federal Ministry of Education’s vision and is part of the paradigm shift in the education sector, specifically the adoption of current test administration techniques geared towards upholding the academic and moral integrity of the National Policy on Education.”
Mr. Dangut further disclosed that 574 schools convicted of exam misconduct had their licenses terminated by the council.
Protection and a crackdown on misconduct
In order to guarantee a seamless and trouble-free test procedure, WAEC is collaborating closely with the Nigeria Police Force and state governments. Mr. Dangut recognized that previous security issues had interrupted exams in some areas of the nation.
“Conducting examinations in such situations has been difficult, but it has been overcome,” he stated.
Additionally, the council cautioned schools, supervisors, and applicants to adhere closely to exam rules.
Mr. Dangut emphasized that each candidate would receive a different pre-printed paper version for the 2025 exam.
“Any candidate who decides to write a different paper than the one that has been assigned will be held accountable,” he said.
Additionally, he warned against supporting rogue websites and promised that WAEC will keep working with law enforcement to crack down on those responsible.
Candidates’ digital assistance
WAEC has launched several digital learning resources, such as the WAEC E-Study Portal, WAEC E-Learning Portal, and WAEC Konnect, to assist students in getting ready for the new exam format.
For applicants and stakeholders, these systems offer direct updates, performance analysis, marking schemes, and previous questions.
“To help candidates understand expectations and improve performance, WAEC has also compiled previous question papers and chief examiners’ reports for various subjects,” he continued.
Outcome and certification schedule
The council promised that 45 days following the exam’s conclusion, the 2025 WASSCE results will be made public.
Within ninety days, candidates will have access to digital copies of their certificates through the WAEC Digital Certificate platform.
Mr. Dangut reiterated WAEC’s dedication to carrying out a “credible examination” in collaboration with state ministries, security agencies, the Federal Ministry of Education, and other relevant parties.
