TASUED, OOU, FUNAAB Join Ongoing ASUU Strike

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Ijagun, Adewale Ositoye, along with his counterpart from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Ola Oyedele, and a reliable source from the leadership at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, confirmed on Monday that the three institutions have joined the ongoing national strike as instructed by the union’s national leadership.

Ositoye mentioned that his colleagues at TASUED have adhered to the national directive of ASUU by refraining from attending lectures until the conclusion of the 14-day warning strike, which started on Monday, October 13.

When asked to elaborate on the strike, the ASUU leader stated, “There is really nothing more to add aside from going on the warning strike as resolved by the national ASUU, and the reasons behind this were detailed in the earlier press conference held by the national body.”

Oyedele from FUNAAB affirmed, “I can only confirm that my fellow colleagues at the university have participated in the national strike, and any further questions should be directed to the national ASUU.”

A top executive member among the ASUU representatives from OOU, who requested anonymity, also informed PUNCH Online that the university is compelled to follow the national directive from the ASUU leadership.

The source commented, “This is a national strike, and we are all aware of the issues at hand; the lecturers at OOU share the same sentiments, and we are all dissatisfied with the current situation, thus we have joined the national strike.”

Two students from FUNAAB, Benjamin Okoli and Temiloluwa Timothy, expressed their regret to reporters regarding the disruption the industrial action may cause to the academic calendar.

Okoli remarked, “Strikes typically bring about consequences for the students, interrupting the smooth progression of the academic session. One could end up taking five years or longer to complete a four-year degree.”

“The students are unhappy, and we truly hope that ASUU and the government can resolve their differences peacefully to allow normal academic activities to resume without interruption.”

On Sunday, ASUU announced a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria due to the government’s failure to meet its requests.

The National President of the Union, Chris Piwuna, made this declaration during a press conference in Abuja on Sunday at the University of Abuja.

“It is clear that there is currently nothing sufficient to prevent the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to initiate a two-week warning strike following the 14-day notice issued on September 28, 2025.”

“As a result, all branches of ASUU are hereby instructed to cease their services starting from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025.”

“The warning strike will be total and comprehensive as agreed upon in the last NEC meeting,” Piwuna stated.
