JAMB Screens 6,458 UTME Results Over High-Tech Cheating
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced yesterday that it is examining the results of 6,458 candidates who participated in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) due to suspected involvement in “high-tech cheating.”
Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the JAMB Registrar, made this announcement during the launch of a special committee aimed at investigating cases of technology-enhanced malpractice identified during this year’s UTME.
The JAMB registrar lamented the increasing sophistication of exam fraud, which is being facilitated by operators of accredited computer-based test centers (CBT) throughout the nation.
He pointed out that malpractice has progressed beyond conventional methods into “technologically advanced forms,” encompassing numerous instances of biometric and identity fraud perpetrated by both accredited CBT centers and candidates.
The JAMB registrar emphasized the urgent need for measures to safeguard the integrity of the country’s examinations.
Oloyede stated, “This year, we encountered a number of unusual incidents, and we believed it would be prudent to broaden our resources. We are convinced that God has provided this nation with abundant resources that we can utilize.
“Examination malpractice is a battle we must engage in with every ounce of determination we possess.”
The JAMB registrar cautioned that if fraud remains unchecked, it could negatively impact various sectors and damage Nigeria’s reputation.
He revealed that 141 instances of “standard” examination malpractice have been forwarded to JAMB’s disciplinary committee.
Oloyede outlined the committee’s responsibilities as investigating all cases of image blending, finger blending, false claims of albinism, and result falsification in the 2025 examination.
Additionally, the JAMB registrar noted that the committee will identify the methods, patterns, tools, and technologies employed to carry out these infractions, as well as review existing examination and registration policies and suggest improvements.
Other responsibilities of the committee include determining the culpability or innocence of each of the 6,458 suspected candidates whose results, excluding the albinism category, are still pending and recommending suitable disciplinary actions or sanctions against individuals or groups found guilty.
