Build your foundation before final accounts
First master the accounting equation and debit/credit effect of assets, liabilities, capital, income and expenses. For every transaction, ask which two accounts change and whether each increases or decreases. Post to ledgers and balance them manually until the logic becomes automatic.
Learn corrections and reconciliation by cause
A trial balance can agree and still contain errors. Classify omission, commission, principle, original entry, reversal and compensating errors. For bank reconciliation, separate items already in the cash book from timing differences that belong only in the reconciliation. Update the cash book first where necessary.
Final accounts: follow a fixed order
Start with revenue and cost of sales, calculate gross profit, add other income, deduct expenses and then prepare the financial position. Build an adjustment checklist: closing inventory, accruals, prepayments, depreciation, bad debts, allowance for doubtful debts and drawings. Show workings clearly even in practice.
Special accounts need separate templates
Keep one page each for manufacturing, clubs, departments, branches, joint ventures, partnerships and companies. Record the unique purpose, accounts required and special adjustments. Do not use a sole-trader format blindly. For partnerships, read the partnership agreement first; for clubs, distinguish capital receipts from revenue receipts.
Calculations students often lose
- Inventory valuation and its effect on profit.
- Depreciation for part-years and disposals.
- Subscription in arrears or advance.
- Partnership interest, salary, drawings and goodwill.
- Manufacturing overhead and work in progress.
- Control-account missing figures.
How to practise
Reading a solution is not practice. Close the book, rule the account, enter figures, balance it and compare your result. Keep an error ledger with four columns: topic, wrong step, correct rule and a fresh example. Rework each error after 48 hours.
Eight-week plan
- Concepts, documents, double entry and trial balance.
- Cash books, petty cash and corrections.

- Sole-trader final accounts and adjustments.
- Inventory, incomplete records and manufacturing.
- Not-for-profit, departmental and branch accounts.
- Joint ventures, partnerships, companies and public sector.
