Make rudiments automatic

Write scales, key signatures, intervals and rhythmic values from memory. Clap or tap time signatures and calculate equivalent note/rest values. On a keyboard diagram, identify enharmonic equivalents and use scales to determine a piece’s key.

Practise harmony by voice-leading

Learn triad qualities, inversions and cadences before attempting four-part progressions. Check doubling, spacing, parallel fifths and octaves, leading-note resolution and voice movement. For modulation, identify the pivot or transition and the new key rather than guessing from one accidental.

Study African music through sound and society

Learn instrument families, construction, sound production, ensemble roles and performance contexts. Compare Nigerian folksongs by occasion, form, performer, language, rhythm and social function. Build profiles of the Nigerian and African musicians named in the PDF and listen to representative recordings.

History and composition

Make a Western music timeline with period, style, texture, forms, instruments and major composers. Learn binary, ternary, rondo and other forms named in the official syllabus. Write short melodies and analyse phrase structure, cadence and rhythm.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing key signature with a single accidental.
  • Counting beats without considering time signature.
  • Misidentifying inversion or interval quality.
  • Memorising musicians without their contributions.
  • Reading history without listening to the music.

Eight-week plan

  1. Staff, notes, rests, rhythm and time.
  2. Keys, scales, keyboard and intervals.
  3. Terms, signs, transcription and aural drills.
  4. Triads, inversions, motion and cadences.
  5. Non-chord tones, modulation and composition.
  6. Nigerian/African folksongs, instruments and performers.
  7. Western history, composers and forms.
  8. Comparative music, nationalism and timed tests.
