Use the official text list, not a shortened summary
Open the PDF and create a separate checklist for every prescribed Qur’anic passage and hadith. For each one, learn the Arabic text to the level required by your course, the translation, key vocabulary, context, main teaching and practical lesson. Do not attach a moral lesson to the wrong passage.
How to study revelation, Tafsir and Tajwid
Arrange revelation and compilation chronologically: first revelation, Makkan and Madinan periods, recording, collection and standardisation. Distinguish Tafsir sources and responsible interpretation. For Tajwid, practise aloud with a competent teacher or reliable recording; theory alone will not secure recognition of rules in actual words.
Tawhid and articles of faith
Define each concept precisely and support it with relevant evidence. Distinguish Tawhid from forms of shirk and understand implications for worship and conduct. Study belief in Allah, angels, books, messengers, the Last Day and divine decree as an integrated worldview, not six unrelated definitions.
Fiqh: organise worship by conditions and actions
For purification, salah, zakat, sawm and hajj, make tables for meaning, conditions, pillars, recommended acts, invalidators, exemptions and social benefits. In family law, cover marriage requirements, rights, responsibilities, divorce, waiting period and inheritance principles as specified in the official syllabus.
Economics, law and political principles
Connect lawful earning, contracts, riba, zakat, inheritance and social welfare. Compare primary and secondary sources of Islamic law and recognise the major schools without turning legitimate differences into confusion. For political thought, focus on justice, consultation, accountability, leadership and citizens’ responsibilities.
History: use a timeline and map
Begin with conditions in Jahiliyyah, then trace the Prophet’s birth, call, persecution, Hijrah, Madinan community, major engagements, treaties and Farewell Pilgrimage. Study each Rightly Guided Caliph through selection, achievements, administration and challenges. Map routes through which Islam reached Africa and the centres of learning it influenced.
Common mistakes
- Memorising Arabic without meaning or application.
- Mixing Makkan and Madinan events.
- Confusing conditions, pillars and recommended acts.
- Attributing an achievement to the wrong caliph.
- Using cultural practice as if it were necessarily Islamic law.
