The FG says we’re close to dealing with SSANU and NASU.
The FG announced yesterday that it was negotiating an end to the strike by members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities – SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions – NASU.
Due to the failure to pay their four-month paychecks that were delayed during their 2022 walkout, both unions went on indefinite strike Monday.
Following a meeting at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja with representatives from both unions’ Joint Action Committees (JAC), the FG made a statement.
Following the meeting, former Education Minister Dr. Yusuf Sununu, who was appointed as the meeting’s chair by newly appointed Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, told reporters that work was being done to address the concerns brought up by the unions.
He stated that the administration was addressing the issue holistically and that negotiations had evolved to the point where the unions’ demands were being met.
The government is dedicated to having a stable educational system and resolving the ongoing crisis in the sector, Sununu reassured the unions.
He stated: “We just held a meeting to discuss the ongoing strike that was started by the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU, per the directive of the Minister of Education, who also joined us virtually.”
We went over the strike’s causes and informed them of the Federation Ministry of Education’s efforts to address the problems.
For the ministry to tackle every issue holistically, we took a comprehensive look at where we are currently and then added other challenges that are anticipated to arise.
“We all agreed at the end of the meeting that we have advanced in our efforts to address the situation, and we will keep working together to put an end to the strike as soon as possible.”We are all pleased with our conversation’s current state.
We have also begged them to cooperate as much as possible with us throughout the past year to guarantee consistency in our academic sessions.
To fulfill President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which calls for all children to get high-quality education through skills and competencies, Sununu asked the unions to show the same generosity to the incoming ministers.
Hassan Makolo, the chairman of NASU’s JAC, stated that after members verified they had received alerts, the union leadership would end the strike.
“As we constantly emphasize, the JAC of NASU and SSANU is not a strike monger, and we had an open discussion on the problems at hand. A strike is always the result of certain problems.
We have been able to talk about several topics that might come up tomorrow, aside from the ongoing strike, and you would say JAC once more.
We have reached a consensus that, if everything we discussed today goes according to plan, the JAC strike will be called off in a few hours.
“What do we mean by ‘go well’? By the time our members begin to tell us they have received alerts, then we have come to the end of the struggle on our hands. I want to believe that we do not need to come back here to agitate for the same issues.”
