ASUU to Tinubu: Stop Mass Resignations in Varsities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed that the Federal Government has not demonstrated respect for higher education regarding how it handles the welfare and working conditions of academic staff in public universities.

Nevertheless, the union emphasized that it will continue to advocate for improved welfare and working conditions for its members and will ensure that governments allocate sufficient funding to revitalize public universities for the benefit of the masses’ children.

Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, the Chairman of ASUU at the University of Ibadan, made these comments on Thursday during his appearance on “Situation Room,” a radio program in Ibadan.

ASUU began a two-week warning strike on Monday to protest the federal government’s neglect in signing the renegotiated draft agreement reached by the Yayale Ahmed committee, which had been established by the Tinubu-led administration to renegotiate with the union and concluded its meetings over eight months ago.

Dr. Afolabi indicated that the federal government has disregarded ASUU for more than eight months, stating that the union is reluctant to engage in a warning strike but felt compelled to employ a delay tactic, as the federal government has ignored the principle of collective bargaining.

The ASUU leader noted that the union had waited for eight months and organized protests to raise awareness among Nigerians about the need for the government to sign the draft renegotiated agreement worked on by the committee led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, only for the government to respond by establishing a new committee to restart discussions from scratch.

Dr. Afolabi questioned how one could lack trust in their own committees while simultaneously creating another committee to assess the work of the previous one and then formulating a larger committee to negotiate with the union again.

“Currently, the situation is dire. Professors are struggling to commute to the office due to skyrocketing transportation costs. Those who do manage to come face difficulties concentrating because of numerous unaddressed needs. Now, professors are choosing to resign and move abroad, while top graduates show no interest in pursuing academia, let alone applying for teaching positions. These developments will have serious implications for the future of university education in Nigeria,” he remarked.
