ASUU Strike Shuts Down UNIDEL as Lecturers Defy FG

A two-week warning strike initiated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has halted academic operations and disrupted final semester exams at the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State.
During a visit to the university, our correspondent observed that the upheaval has caused visible distress among final-year students, while some were seen packing their belongings to return home, as many of these students were scheduled to finish their exams by Wednesday, October 15.
When contacted, Dr. Salim Ahmad, the ASUU Chairman at Federal University Dutse, stated that the strike was a necessary response to the Federal Government’s inconsistencies and the failure of successive administrations to adhere to the 2017 agreement concerning their demands — matters that he asserted were documented and signed between the National Union Executives and the Federal Government but have not been addressed.
“Every educator wishes to be in the classroom, but we continuously worry about the state of teaching and learning,” Dr. Ahmad remarked. “Our primary concern is for the enhancement of our universities’ conditions, which the Federal Government promised but has not fulfilled since 2017.”
Likewise, Dr. Mustapha Hussain, the ASUU Chairman at Sule Lamido University (SLU), Kafin Hausa, confirmed that their institution has also joined the countrywide warning strike.
According to the chairman, they participated in the strike both as ASUU members and due to the pressing need to enhance the conditions of Nigerian universities to meet global standards.
