ASUP Announces Nationwide Strike Set for December 2, 2024

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is preparing for a nationwide strike beginning on December 2, 2024. This significant decision was announced by Comrade Abubakar J. Abdullahi, Chairman of the ASUP Kaduna Polytechnic Chapter, who emphasized that the union’s choice stems from the Federal Government’s failure to address longstanding demands from its members.

During a recent press briefing held in Kaduna, Abdullahi expressed his frustration over the government’s silence and inaction, stating, “We have no choice but to consider a complete shutdown of our institutions by December 2, 2024.” He highlighted the urgency of their situation and the necessity for immediate action from the government to prevent disruptions in education.

Abdullahi outlined several key demands that ASUP is making, which include:

  • Release of NEEDS Assessment Funds: This involves the prompt disbursement of the second tranche of intervention funds designed to improve infrastructure and academic resources within polytechnics.
  • Implementation of Salary Review: ASUP is calling for the immediate execution of a 25/35% salary review applicable to all public polytechnics to ensure fair compensation for staff.
  • Payment of Arrears: The union demands the settlement of accumulated salary arrears owed to its members.

Abdullahi stressed the importance of a robust education sector for the country’s future, asserting that the quality of education must not be compromised. He urged the Federal Government to engage in constructive dialogue and take swift action to resolve these issues before the strike begins.

Background to the Strike Decision

ASUP’s leadership had previously issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government on October 6, 2024. This ultimatum detailed pressing demands aimed at tackling systemic challenges that hinder the advancement of polytechnics. Abdullahi noted that despite the passage of this deadline, there has been no response or resolution from the government, forcing the union to consider a strike as a last resort.

During the news conference, he reiterated the union’s core demands, which also include:

  • Resolution of CONTISS-15 Arrears: Finalizing the long-standing issues related to the CONTISS-15 migration for lower cadre staff.
  • Outstanding Promotion Arrears: Addressing delays in promotion-related payments.
  • Increased Funding: Tackling the chronic underfunding of polytechnic institutions.
  • Unpaid Allowances: Resolving the issue of various unpaid allowances that affect the livelihoods of educators.

Abdullahi expressed deep concern that without adequate government responsiveness, the quality and sustainability of the educational system would be at risk. He emphasized that the union cannot afford to overlook these critical issues any longer, highlighting the vital role a strong education sector plays in the nation’s development.

Call to Action

The chairman’s call for a dialogue with the Federal Government is clear. He urges the government to take meaningful steps toward addressing these pressing challenges. If these issues remain unresolved, the impending strike is expected to significantly disrupt academic activities across all polytechnics in Nigeria.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics also encourages interested parties to stay informed through their official website at asupng.org, where updates, publications, and news related to their initiatives and demands can be found.

In conclusion, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics is taking a strong stand to advocate for the rights and needs of its members. The outcome of this situation will have important implications for the future of polytechnic education in Nigeria. The union firmly believes that a strong educational framework is essential for the nation’s growth and development, and it calls upon the government to prioritize these issues to ensure the continued success of polytechnic institutions.
