ASUU Suspends Four-Month Strike at Ondo State University
Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State have ended their four-month strike.
The lecturers began an indefinite strike in August because Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration did not pay salaries and arrears.
In an interview with The Nation on Monday, Comrade Bolawaji Oshodi, the chairman of the AAUA ASUU chapter, confirmed the strike’s suspension.
He said the union decided to resume academic activities after reaching an agreement with the university management.
“For now, we have called off the strike. Our decision comes from the understanding we reached with the university management. The management has also been supportive, and we appreciate that.
“Even though we are still owed one month’s salary, we have chosen to suspend the strike because we are committed to the education system and our students,” Oshodi stated.
Previously, ASUU AAUA sent a letter signed by both Oshodi and the union’s secretary, Olusegun Taiwo, informing the university about their withdrawal due to unpaid salaries and arrears.
“This decision follows the resolution made at the Congress on Thursday, August 21, 2025, concerning the non-payment of our salaries and arrears.
“Through this memo, we have instructed our members to halt all academic activities within the university until all unpaid salaries and arrears are settled,” the letter said.
The union has reported that it has communicated several times with both the university management and the state government about the issue of unpaid wages.
Oshodi stated that the lecturers resorted to a “total strike” to highlight their demands.
“Honestly, our main challenge is funding. The state government is not providing financial support for the university. Right now, we are owed two months’ salaries (July and August).
“This does not include various arrears, promotion arrears, essence workload, and other debts totaling billions. The state government has not responded. Therefore, we have decided that we will not return until these issues are resolved,” he added.
