About UNN
The University of Nigeria, commonly referred to as UNN, is a federal university located in Nsukka, Enugu State, Eastern part of Nigeria.
Founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1955 and formally opened on 7 October 1960.
The University of Nigeria has three campuses in Enugu State– Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku-Ozalla.
The University of Nigeria is the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria, modelled upon the American educational system. It was the first land-grant university in Africa and one of the five most reputed universities in Nigeria.
The university has 17 Faculties and 102 academic departments. The university offers 108 undergraduate programs and 211 postgraduate program.
Department of Library and Information Science | Faculty of Education
Library and Information Science (LIS) is an interdisciplinary field of study that centers on the documentation that records our stories, memory, history, and knowledge.
LIS professionals serve as custodians of printed materials, records, photographs, audiovisual materials, and ephemera, in both analog and digital form.
Objectives
- To maintain and preserve books, materials and resources with historical, cultural, social, economic and archival value, and other related materials in an organized collection to provide members of the community these materials and enriched their personal and professional lives.
- To set an environment for more productive teaching-learning process.
- To maintain user-oriented policies and programs.
- Preparing global information professionals

- Fostering technological proficiency.
- Promoting information literacy.
Scope
Library and Information Science (LIS) is an interdisciplinary field that applies the practices, perspectives, and tools of management, information technology, education, and other areas to libraries; the collection, organization, preservation, and dissemination of information resources; and the political economy of information.
Admission Requirements for Library and Information Science
UTME
Students admitted by entrance examination must meet University minimum entry requirements of at least five credits, including credits in English and a Science subject, in not more than two sittings, in the West African School Certificate or its equivalent.
Direct Entry
Direct entry candidates must hold one of the following qualifications:
- Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) with at least merit in Library and Information Science;
- Diploma in Library and Information Science with at least merit in Higher School Certificate/G.C.E. Advanced Level in at least two subjects.
Jamb UTME Subjects Combination for Library and Information Science
English, and three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Library and Information Science under the Faculty of Sciences are; Mathematics, Physics and one (1) of Biology, Chemistry, Agric Science, Economics and Geography.
O-level Subjects Combination for Library and Information Science
Five SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and three other relevant Arts/Science/Social Science subjects.
Departmental Cut Off Mark for Library and Information Science
The departmental cut off mark for library and information science in UNN is not yet out.
But it may likely be the same as last year’s.
