About UNN
The University of Nigeria, commonly referred to as UNN, is a federal university located in Nsukka, Enugu State, Eastern part of Nigeria. Founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1955 and formally opened on 7 October 1960.
The University of Nigeria has three campuses in Enugu State– Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku-Ozalla.
The University of Nigeria is the first full-fledged Indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria, modeled upon the American educational system. It was the first land-grant university in Africa and one of the five most reputed universities in Nigeria.
The university has 17 Faculties and 102 academic departments. The university offers 108 undergraduate programs and 211 postgraduate programs.
Department of Social Science| Faculty of Education
Social studies education most commonly refers to the training of professional educators to teach social studies. It includes training social studies educators who emphasize the need for social education by teaching various social science disciplines (e.g., history, psychology, political science).
The field of social studies education is unique and is occasionally referred to as social science education and/or history education. However, it should be noted that social science education and social studies education are often used interchangeably, but history education is a subfield of social studies education.
Some may argue the opposite, because of history education’s perceived dominance in the field of social studies education, but this is neither a common nor a majority perspective.
The Department of Social Science Education at the University of Nigeria (UNN) adheres to specific admission requirements that aspiring students need to fulfill in order to pursue a degree in social science education.
The admission requirements encompass both the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry admission criteria.
Philosophy, Objectives, and Scope of Social Science
The philosophy of the Social Science Education Programs is consistent with Nigeria.
Philosophy of Education which is based in part on the need to develop the Nigerian child into an all-around effective citizen, as well as the integration of the child into the Nigerian multi-ethnic community. (cf FRN, 2004).
The basic objective of the Department of Social Sciences Education is to train Social Sciences teachers who are academically and professionally competent to educate pupils at any level of the education system.
The main purpose of these B.Sc. degree programs in social science Education is to turn out dedicated and reliable social science educators knowledgeable in their respective areas of academic interest and skillful in classroom management as well as in dealing with human beings.
In more specific terms, the programs are aimed at:
- Producing highly motivated, conscientious, skillful, innovative, and efficient classroom teachers for all levels of the Nigerian educational system;
- Training teachers who are mindful, proud, and protective of the socio-cultural, political, and economic institutions of Nigeria; and
- Equipping teachers of the social sciences with requisite physical and intellectual skills for effective leadership, followership, and cooperative roles in different sectors of Nigerian society.
Subject Combinations for Social Science
The following subject combinations are available in the Department:
- Education/Economics
- Education/Geography
- Education/Political Science
- Education/Social Studies
Students of the Department of Social Science Education take General Education courses from the Departments of Educational Foundations and Arts Education.
They also take courses from the various Departments within and outside the Faculty in which their teaching subjects are based.
Admission Requirements for Social Science
University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Admission Requirements
Candidates who have satisfied the minimum University requirements of five 0’level credit passes including English and Mathematics and other relevant subjects to be combined with Education, except social studies which should require credit in any social science or Arts subject.
Only candidates who wish to offer Education in Economics are expected to have credit in Mathematics while those who want to combine Education with Political science, Social studies, and Geography need only pass in Mathematics.
Direct Entry Admission Requirements
Candidates may be admitted into the three-year degree program if they possess minimum University entry requirements plus any of the following:
- Two “A” level passes in relevant subjects, including the candidate’s proposed course.
- NCE distinction credit/merit passes in addition to TC II or O-level credited in relevant subjects.
- Diploma in Public Administration, Social Work, and Environmental/Geographic Education.
Jamb UTME Subjects Combination for Social Science
English Language, and any three (3) of Christian Religious Studies, Economics, Geography/Physics, Government, History, and Islamic Studies.
O-Level Subjects Combination for Social Science
Five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes including English Language, a science subject, and the subject to be combined with education.
Departmental cut-off mark for Social Science
The departmental cut-off mark has not yet been released.
