ASUU Confirms Talks With FG as Strike Hits Day 7
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has verified that talks are still going on with the Federal Government’s Renegotiation Team, which is headed by former Head of Service Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, as the union’s two-week warning strike approaches its seventh day.
In an effort to increase the likelihood that the industrial action would be resolved quickly, the union also revealed that “progress is being recorded” on five of its seven requests.
The release of third-party deductions, the payment of promotion arrears, and the mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) were among the areas of progress mentioned by ASUU President Prof. Christopher Piwuna in a bulletin to members dated October 19, 2025, which The Guardian was able to access.
Others include the eviction of members of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Lagos State University (LASU), and Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), as well as the seizure of land belonging to the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA).
The letter, which was titled Strike Bulletin No. 2, mentioned that other well-known Nigerians had also stepped in to try to break the ongoing deadlock between the government and the union.
All aspects of the proposed renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement are still being worked on, with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) serving as a framework.
“We applaud the bravery and tenacity of our members across all branches, but in the coming days, we must continue to be strong and unified.
Attend your branch congress meetings as soon as possible, Piwuna advised, as the Branch Chairperson is always the sole trustworthy source of information.
The continuous warning strike, which was announced last week, is a component of ASUU’s campaign to force the government to carry out unfinished agreements and deal with problems that impact institutional autonomy, staff welfare, and university funding.
