NLC Meets ASUU, SSANU Over Ongoing Nationwide Strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has initiated a private meeting with the leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) to discuss the current strike that is affecting academic operations nationwide.
This meeting, held at the NLC’s national headquarters in Abuja, also included representatives from the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP).
Previously, the NLC had called all union leaders from higher education institutions to a discussion aimed at finding lasting solutions to the ongoing crisis, which emerged after talks between the unions and the Federal Government broke down.
Nigeria’s higher education system has experienced frequent interruptions over the years, with the latest strike leading to the closure of universities across the country.
During a press briefing at the University of Abuja on Sunday, ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, declared the commencement of the strike. This follows the expiration of a 14-day notice given to the Federal Government on September 28. The union attributed the strike to unresolved issues regarding staff welfare, unpaid salaries, inadequate infrastructure, and the government’s failure to honor the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement.
While the Federal Government recently asserted that progress had been made in negotiations, with Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa announcing the release of ₦50 billion for earned allowances and ₦150 billion in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, ASUU rejected these offers as insufficient.
The union’s requests include the full implementation of the 2009 agreement, the payment of unpaid salaries, enhanced funding for universities, protection for members against victimization, the resolution of pending promotions and arrears, and the release of withheld union and cooperative deductions.
The NLC has reiterated its support for ASUU and other educational unions, calling on the government to honor its agreements and uphold workers’ rights.
The ongoing discussions are anticipated to outline the unions’ next steps and suggest measures to ensure the welfare of academic staff, while also safeguarding the future and stability of Nigeria’s higher education system.
