CONUA Declares: We’re Not Part of ASUU Strike

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has stated that it is not involved in the two-week warning strike announced by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

It called on its members in universities across Nigeria to carry on with their academic and administrative responsibilities without interruption, while also requesting protection for its members from the Vice-Chancellors of the institutions.

In a statement released on Sunday and signed by its National President, Comrade ‘Niyi Sunmonu‘, CONUA noted that this clarification was necessary due to “recent misinformation” spreading on social media and other platforms, which had created confusion among students and the academic community.

“CONUA has not initiated any strike action and is not participating in any existing strike,” Sunmonu stated. “This clarification is issued to correct the misunderstandings.”

The union reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring academic stability, excellence, and collaborative engagement with government and stakeholders in the higher education sector.

It encouraged its members to remain committed by diligently fulfilling their teaching, research, and administrative duties, stressing that such commitment is essential for preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s universities.

The union reiterated that it currently has no grounds to declare a dispute or engage in a strike. It recalled that when the Federal Government established the renegotiation committee for the 2009 Agreement in October 2024, it was “noticeably and intentionally excluded.”

It stated that following a formal protest, the union met with the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on September 11, 2025, where he recognized CONUA’s concerns and promised that the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee would be broadened to include all academic unions in federal higher institutions.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Education has since honored that commitment by enlarging the committee.
