CONUA Alleges ASUU Assault, Seeks Police Protection

As the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) began its nationwide 14-day warning strike early on Monday, members of the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), from the University of Benin chapter, have accused ASUU of reportedly assaulting their members who were overseeing ongoing examinations at the university.

The union’s chairman, Comrade Ishaq Osagie Eweka, made this claim while speaking with reporters in Benin City on Monday.

He alleged that ASUU members entered the classroom where students were taking their exams and forcefully removed them.

Comrade Eweka stated that the lecturers faced rough treatment as ASUU members carried out their orders.

In his words, “They came into the classroom, threatened the vice chairperson of our union, damaged our phones, and I’ve sent videos to the chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Edo State council, to verify what I’ve recorded.”

“I want to inform the public that the University of Benin is currently conducting exams. The ASUU may be on strike, but the Congress of Nigerian University Academics is present to oversee the examinations.”

“It is your obligation as a union, having called a strike, to withdraw your services, but you should not impose your strike on another union.”

Eweka also appealed to the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to assist them and shield them from unwarranted embarrassment.

“We want to take this chance to urge the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police, and other security organizations to ensure the protection of CONUA members from the threats and harassment of ASUU, who have opted to be uncivil, trying to impose their wishes on the members of other academic unions.”

“We are a civil union, and we believe in dialogue. We reject confrontation and are negotiating with the government, confident that our members’ welfare will eventually be addressed,” Eweka remarked.

This assertion was also supported by Professor Godspower Ekuobase, a lecturer in the Computer Science department at UNIBEN.

Attempts to contact ASUU’s Chairman at UNIBEN, Prof. Enaruna Edosa, were unsuccessful as his phone kept ringing without a response, but a member of ASUU, who wished to remain anonymous, refuted the alleged assault on CONUA members, asserting that no such incident occurred at UNIBEN. He claimed that no members of CONUA were assaulted, as asserted by their chairman.
