ASUU Strike: Reps Move to Prevent University System Collapse

The House of Representatives has expressed worry regarding the two-week warning strike initiated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), labeling it as a possible risk to the stability of Nigeria’s higher education system and national progress.

This came after a motion of urgent national significance presented by Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan during Tuesday’s plenary session. The legislator urged for prompt legislative action to avert the situation from escalating into another extended period of academic inactivity.

Whingan pointed out that the strike arose from unresolved disputes between ASUU and the Federal Government concerning the execution of earlier agreements, which include revitalization funding for universities, earned academic allowances, salary structures, and institutional independence.

He voiced concerns that while the current strike is termed a “warning strike,” similar past industrial actions have typically evolved into serious crises, disrupting academic schedules, exasperating students, and hindering research and innovation.

“The Nigerian university system is crucial to our national growth, innovation, and human capital development,” Whingan stated. “Any interruptions in its functioning diminish our economic competitiveness, scientific progression, and youth productivity.”

Referencing Section 18 of the amended 1999 Constitution, he stressed that education is a constitutional obligation and a catalyst for social and technological advancement, asserting that both the government and university unions must guarantee its continuity and quality.

The legislator expressed regret that ongoing strikes in the higher education sector have resulted in student dropouts, brain drain, and diminishing public confidence, which jeopardize national stability and Nigeria’s long-term developmental objectives.

After his address, the House resolved to assign its Committees on University Education and Labour, Employment and Productivity to swiftly mediate between ASUU and the Federal Government to facilitate an agreeable and lasting resolution.

It also urged both sides to practice restraint, engage in dialogue, and prioritize the welfare of students and the nation above other considerations.

Moreover, the House requested that the Federal Government set up a permanent joint consultative forum with recognized university unions to ensure continuous dialogue and prevent future strikes.

The Committee on Legislative Compliance was tasked with overseeing and reporting the progress of the mediation efforts to the House within a week.
