WAEC Withholds 192,000 Results Over Malpractice
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has suspended the results of 192,089 candidates from the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to alleged participation in various forms of examination malpractice, as announced on Monday.
This number accounts for 9.75 percent of the total 1,969,313 candidates who participated in the exams across 23,554 schools — slightly lower than the 11.92 percent who had their results withheld in 2024.
While revealing the results at WAEC’s national headquarters in Lagos, the Head of Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, stated that the violations included the use of prohibited mobile phones in exam rooms and collaboration among candidates.
“These dishonest individuals are a significant problem for the Council. Some even misuse our name to circulate false information. We have detained some of them, and proper penalties will be enforced,” Dangut remarked.
WAEC implemented a new serialization process for objective papers in key subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, Biology, and Economics in 2025. This initiative aimed to reduce collaboration and make misconduct more challenging. Dangut pointed out that while this action resulted in a decline in performance in objective assessments, it highlighted the necessity for students to independently prepare.
From the total number of candidates, 1,517,517 (77.06 percent) had their results completely processed and released, while 451,796 (22.94 percent) remain under processing due to technical difficulties. WAEC confirmed that these issues would be addressed in the upcoming days.
The council also cautioned that states with outstanding examination fees would not be able to access the results of their sponsored candidates until these debts are settled.
The 2025 WASSCE took place from April 24 to June 20, with the marking concluding on July 21. WAEC utilized a real-time digital scoring system to enhance both the speed and accuracy of the results.
“The measures implemented this year have bolstered the examination’s integrity. We will persist in refining our processes to outpace malpractice,” Dangut concluded.
