WAEC Trains Schools on Computer-Based Exams in Nigeria

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Anambra has emphasized that precise candidate registration is crucial for the successful implementation of Computer-Based Examinations (CBE), according to a report by The Track News.

Mr. Tunde Ajibade, the WAEC Branch Controller, made this declaration in Awka during a strategic meeting with the Ministry of Education and essential education stakeholders.

The meeting, as reported by The Track News, focused on the preparations for the Federal Government’s upcoming CBE, aiming to formulate strategies for the successful execution of the 2025/2026 examinations.

Present at the meeting were school principals, teachers, private school proprietors, designated cyber café operators, and other education leaders.

Ajibade cautioned that mistakes during the registration phase could have lasting effects, including potential loss of admission opportunities.

“With the forthcoming implementation of CBE, it is imperative for registration officials to be meticulous.

“Meticulous in capturing candidates’ images, as entry into the examination hall will necessitate face verification.

“An error like uploading an incorrect image could make a candidate ineligible. A successful examination begins with accurate registration.

“Mistakes made at this stage can disrupt a candidate’s future. While certain errors can be rectified, others cannot,” he stated.

The Track News reported that Ajibade also expressed concern regarding the increasing number of correction cases resulting from registration mistakes.

He highlighted the importance of adequate training and awareness for registration officers.

Regarding examination centers for CBE, Ajibade mentioned that schools meeting WAEC accreditation standards would serve as venues.

He noted that schools lacking sufficient infrastructure would be combined with nearby accredited institutions.

Commenting on candidates with special needs, Anambra Head of Examinations, WAEC, Mr. Olanrewaju Fadehan, told The Track News that schools should take more than just checking a disability box during registration.

He clarified that schools must obtain and complete a proforma form to ensure that candidates with disabilities receive the necessary accommodations during the examinations.

“Schools need to inform WAEC ahead of time to facilitate proper arrangements,” he said.

In her comments, Anambra Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, praised WAEC for consulting with stakeholders prior to the examinations.

Chuma-Udeh characterized the consultation as a proactive measure toward ensuring credible and transparent assessments.

She reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to supporting examination processes that enhance the quality of education.
