The major areas include:
1. Lexis and Structure
Students should prepare for questions on:
- Everyday vocabulary. Vocabulary related to different fields of human activity.
- Idioms and collocations
- Synonyms, antonyms and homonyms
- Figurative usage
- Sequence of tenses
- Concord and pronoun agreement
- Prepositions
- Conjunctions and determiners
- Word forms and sentence structures
An important point many students miss is that WAEC does not simply test whether you know dictionary definitions. The syllabus states that Lexis questions test your ability to use and understand words in context, including sense relationships such as synonyms, antonyms and homonyms.
2. Essay Writing
The essay section covers different forms of writing, including:
- Letter
- Speech
- Narration
- Description
- Argument/debate
- Report

- Creative writing
You will answer one essay question from five options. Your essay is assessed based on Content, Organization, Expression and Mechanical Accuracy. The minimum required length is 450 words.

4. Summary
The summary section contains a prose passage of about 500 words.
Students are expected to:
- Extract relevant information
- Present required points clearly and concisely
- Avoid repetition and unnecessary words
- Summarize specific parts or aspects of the passage
This section carries 30 marks.
5. Oral English
For candidates in Nigeria and Liberia, Paper 3 is a Test of Orals.
It covers:
- Pure vowels and diphthongs
- Consonants and consonant clusters
- Rhymes
- Word stress and syllable structure
- Emphatic stress
- Intonation patterns
- Phonetic symbols
The Test of Orals consists of 60 multiple-choice questions.
WAEC English Language Exam Format
The WAEC Syllabus For English Language is divided into three examination papers.
Paper 1: 80 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 1 hour, carrying 40 marks.
Paper 2: Essay, Comprehension and Summary. The paper lasts 2 hours and carries 100 marks.
Paper 3: For candidates in Nigeria and Liberia, this is the Test of Orals. It contains 60 multiple-choice questions, lasts 45 minutes and carries 30 marks.
Papers 1 and 2 are taken as a composite paper at one sitting.
Important Things Students Often Miss
Knowing the English Language WAEC Syllabus is not enough. You also need to understand what WAEC expects you to do with each topic.
For example, in Essay Writing, simply writing a long essay is not enough. Your content must address the question, your ideas must be properly organized, and your grammar, spelling and punctuation must be accurate.
For Summary, focus on identifying the exact points requested and expressing them concisely rather than copying large portions of the passage.
For Oral English, don’t study only pronunciation. Stress, intonation, rhymes, consonant clusters and phonetic symbols are all specifically included in the syllabus.
