WAEC Shuts Down 574 Schools for Exam Malpractice

The licenses of 574 institutions that were determined to have engaged in examination misconduct have been withdrawn by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria.

According to the examination authority, even though the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will start on Thursday, April 24, 2025, schools will not be permitted to administer exams.

This was announced at a news conference held on Thursday at the WAEC headquarters in Lagos by Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of the National Office.
According to Dangut, WAEC has sent the federal government the list of impacted schools.

We have informed them about 574 schools this year whose recognition has been revoked, and this will also apply to all examination bodies.

According to the examination center, these are the people whose licenses have been revoked. Therefore, we won’t be doing any exams there. In terms of performing exams, we don’t know them,” Dangut remarked.

From Thursday, April 24, to Friday, June 20, 2025, the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will take place.

According to Dangut, 1,973,253 students from 23,554 schools registered for the test.

Speaking further to break down the numbers, he emphasized that there were 994,025 female candidates and 979,228 male candidates.

He went on to say that there were 158,627 more candidates registered than there were the previous year.

Noting the launch of the first computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for candidates, he emphasized that the organization was using technology to enhance delivery.

“The Council has introduced its first computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates, 2025, as an organization that believes in the use of modern information and communications technology (ICT) to solve myriad problems and improve service delivery to the Nigerian child.”

He went on to say that applicants taking the test will not be given the same questions in each session as part of the steps taken to maintain academic integrity and moral integrity.

The fact that two candidates won’t be asked the same questions on each number starting this year will be of importance to you. For a few of the WASSCE codes, we have implemented this innovation.
“This initiative is in line with the Federal Ministry of Education’s vision and part of the paradigm shift in the education sector, specifically the adoption of current test administration techniques geared towards upholding the academic and moral integrity of the National Policy on Education,” he said.

Dangut expressed worries about insecurity but promised to keep working with state police to ensure sufficient protection for the exam to be conducted smoothly and without incident.
