WAEC rejects NASU’s allegations of victimization.
In response to media reports accusing the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) of breaking an agreement reached on March 10, 2025, regarding the reinstatement of staff check-off dues, the council denied claims of victimization and breach of a Memorandum of Understanding agreed upon with the Non-Academic Staff Union at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment. In a statement released on Tuesday by the acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, WAEC described the accusations as unfounded and reaffirmed its commitment to justice, equity, and adherence to established regulations.
WAEC emphasizes that the deduction of staff check-off dues will be reintroduced by March 2025 as agreed upon, stating that there has been no departure from the agreements reached under the Memorandum of Understanding.
“To be clear, both parties agreed that the Council’s management had never taken any action to suspend trade union activities within the Council about the issue raised regarding the unilateral suspension of union activities in the Council,” the statement stated.
In response to allegations that NASU members were not acknowledged in its branch offices, WAEC insisted that NASU was recognized as a Trade Unions Act-registered trade union.
In response to claims of abuse and threats of moving NASU executives across the nation, the council said that staff transfers are a natural element of professional growth and are detailed in the Conditions of Service handbook that is given to all new hires.
The goal of staff transfers is to help employees advance their careers and acquire more information, skills, and experience in the workplace. According to WAEC, it is not meant to single out or harm union members.
The Council promised that it had no plans to infringe on the rights of its workers or take any actions that would jeopardize union representation.
“WAEC is a law-abiding company that places a high priority on human rights and will never compromise its workers’ rights. We are steadfast in our dedication to justice and integrity,” Adesina declared.
