WAEC Denies Restricting Students’ Subject Choices for 2026 WASSCE
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has clarified that it did not instruct senior secondary students to select specific subjects for the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates (SC) in 2026.
“We want to clearly separate ourselves from this baseless assumption and the information circulating on this topic,” stated Moyosola Adeshina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC.
WAEC explained that the development and oversight of curricula in Nigeria is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, while the Council’s role is to implement government policies through assessments.
“The initiation or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is the responsibility of the Federal Government,” Adeshina pointed out. “WAEC functions strictly within the defined legal and operational frameworks of its host country.”
WAEC reassured stakeholders of its dedication to professionalism and excellence, ensuring that all candidates taking the WASSCE for School Candidates in 2026 will be provided with an equitable opportunity for assessment.
“Schools, stakeholders, and the public are urged to ignore the misleading reports and to refer only to official communication from the Council for precise information regarding the examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the statement concluded.
