WAEC Debunks Subject Restriction Rumor for 2026 WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed claims that it instructed schools to restrict senior secondary students’ subject choices for the 2026 WASSCE, describing the reports as misleading.

Mrs Moyosola Adeshina, Acting Head of WAEC’s Public Affairs Department in Lagos, stated on Tuesday that the public should disregard any information that hasn’t been officially communicated by the Council.

“The Council wants to unequivocally separate itself from this baseless claim. No directive has been issued that limits students’ subject options for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) 2026,” she stated.

Adeshina pointed out that the creation and oversight of school curricula in Nigeria fall entirely under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, while WAEC’s role is to execute policies through assessment.

“As a law-abiding organization, West African Examinations Council functions within the legal and operational frameworks of its host country, emphasizing that any curricular adjustments must adhere to government-sanctioned procedures,” she said.

She went on to clarify that WAEC does not independently introduce or alter subjects, indicating that all modifications go through due process as supervised by the Federal Ministry of Education and other relevant parties.

“The introduction or alteration of any curriculum is not random. WAEC conducts assessments based only on government-approved syllabuses.”

Adeshina assured parents, schools, and candidates that the examination guidelines will be officially communicated through WAEC’s website and credible media outlets, ensuring everyone is appropriately informed.

“We continue to uphold professionalism, transparency, and excellence in service to the Nigerian child.

“Furthermore, no student will be treated unfairly or placed at a disadvantage,” Adeshina guaranteed.

She emphasized that every candidate sitting for the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates will be provided with an equitable opportunity for assessment, reiterating WAEC’s dedication to being a dependable and trustworthy examining body in Nigeria. (NAN)
