WAEC Applauds Ekiti for Upgrading ICT in Schools

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has praised the Ekiti State Government for enhancing ICT facilities in public schools in preparation for the upcoming shift of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination to a computer-based test format.

Amos Dogari, WAEC Branch Controller in Ekiti, stated that this investment will ensure that both students and teachers in the state are well-prepared for the new examination system, while also fostering digital literacy and maintaining examination integrity.

During an advocacy visit to Dr Olabimpe Aderiye, the state Commissioner for Education, in Ado Ekiti, Dogari described the discussion as “very fruitful”, emphasising that it concentrated on strategies for the transition to CBT.

He mentioned that WAEC will soon initiate sensitisation programmes throughout the three senatorial districts to inform students, teachers, and parents about the new process.

“The WASSCE CBT model is a hybrid approach—students will answer multiple-choice questions on-screen, and while essay and practical questions will be shown on-screen, they will be answered using paper booklets. The aim is to modernise the examination, expedite result processing, enhance efficiency, and bolster security against malpractice,” Dogari explained.

The branch controller also emphasised that Ekiti State does not owe any debt to WAEC.

Commissioner Aderiye remarked that all public secondary schools in Ekiti have been supplied with laptops and various ICT tools, which will be utilised to facilitate the transition. She reiterated the government’s dedication to incorporating technology into education.

WAEC previously announced that the complete transition of the WASSCE to CBT is expected to be finished by 2026. Dr Amos Dangut, Head of the National Office, recently informed lawmakers in Abuja that this transition, which began with private candidates in 2024, has already shown “significant progress” and will soon be rolled out nationwide.
