WAEC 2026 WASSCE: Hybrid Exam, No Longer School-Based
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has confirmed that the 2026 WASSCE will incorporate a hybrid format, utilizing both computer-based tests and traditional pen-and-paper methods.
This information was communicated in a message to school principals, signed by L.M. ODOH, the WAEC Zonal Coordinator, on 14th August 2025, detailing the guidelines for registering candidates for the 2026 WASSCE.
The announcement noted, “Please be informed that the WASSCE for School Candidates in 2026 will consist of both hybrid computer-based (CB-WASSCE) and pen-and-paper formats.”
Furthermore, it was indicated that the examination will shift from being school-based to a centre-based format, similar to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
“We also want to emphasize that CB-WASSCE for School Candidates in 2026 will take place at designated centres rather than schools. The exams will be conducted in aggregated centres.”
As a result, the examination body will soon extend invitations to school principals and registration officers for a briefing and training session about the new system and its expectations.
“The School Principals and Registration Officers will be invited shortly for briefing/training sessions regarding the procedures for a flawless registration process and the practical application of Candidates’ Identity Verification, Attendance, Malpractice and Post Examination Management System-CIVAMPEMS.”
Additionally, it announced a staggered registration process, referring to it as the “Notice of float of entries,” to ensure that the process consists of several phases.
“This serves to inform you that the entries for WASSCE for School Candidates in 2025 have been floated. The candidate registration for the examination will involve the following stages: The upload of Continuous Assessment Scores (CASS) 1 & 2 will start on Tuesday, 19th August, and conclude on Friday, 31st October, 2025. Offline registration for candidates will begin on Tuesday, 16th September, and end on Friday, 21st November 2025.
“Online registration for candidates will commence on Monday, 22nd September, and conclude on Friday, 12th December 2025.”
