Why There Is So Much Confusion About WAEC 2026?

Due to new improvement in the structure of WAEC 2026, there are 3 major reasons why students remain confused: There are three major reasons students are confused:

Introduction of CBT (Computer-Based Testing)

WAEC is gradually moving into computer-based exams (CBT) in 2026. This means some objective questions will be answered on a computer while Theory and Practicals may be part digital, part written.

WAEC has stated that the reason for this new development is part of the plan to: reduce exam malpractice, improve speed and accuracy of exam results, and align Nigerian examinations with global standards. Despite these reasons, many students are not used to CBT which is fueling the panic among Nigerians.

Subject Naming and Curriculum Changes

Another major reason for confusion is the restructuring of subjects students will be sitting for. For example: ICT is now referred to as “Digital Technology”. Also, curriculum content has now been updated to reflect modern skills. The problem with this is that many students still do not understand their subject combinations, with many still relying on outdated information.

Poor Information Flow in Schools

Last but not least, some schools do not properly carry their students along. Many schools have not explained clearly the new subject combinations and CBT format, leaving students confused and relying on information on social media, which may sometimes be inaccurate.

What You Should Do Right Now (Very Important)

Since registration is over, here’s what actually matters:

Confirm Your Subjects Immediately

Ask your school/teachers for the updated final subject list and registration slip. After this, crosscheck the details. Make sure:

  • Your subjects align with the course you plan to study in the university.
  • There are no spelling or data errors.

Start Practicing CBT Format NOW

This is non-negotiable. WAEC 2026 will include CBT elements, so you must:

  • Start practicing using a computer.
  • Take timed CBT tests.
  • Learn how to navigate exam screens quickly and master time management.

Ignoring CBT practice may leave you confused in the exam hall even if you studied well.

Stop Passive Reading

Stop reading and rereading for hours on end. This method is not enough to get you your desired score. Do this instead:

  • Use past questions
  • Practice active recall by asking yourself questions after each concept you read.
  • Test yourself daily
  • Focus on Understanding, Not Cramming.

With CBT and the updated WAEC curriculum, exam questions may be more application-based. So, rather than just memorizing answers and topics, you need to understand them.
