2025 UTME Under Scrutiny: House of Reps to Investigate Reported Exam Errors

On Thursday, the House of Representatives decided to investigate the technology glitch that caused many students to fail the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The resolution came after a motion of urgent public interest, supported by Osun State Representative Adewale Adebayo, was adopted.

On May 9, JAMB announced the results of the 2025 UTME, which showed an exceptionally high failure rate. Out of the possible 400 points, more than 78% of candidates received scores below 200.

JAMB discovered a significant technological problem after an initial inspection. Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB Registrar, said during a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday that server problems had impacted the results of 379,997 applicants.

The registrar clarified that during the first three days of the test, the upload of applicants’ responses was interrupted by malfunctioning server updates in JAMB’s Lagos and South-East zones. He explained that one of the board’s two technical service providers was the source of the issue, which was not discovered before the results’ original dissemination.

Oloyede said that all impacted candidates would have the chance to repeat the test between May 16 and May 19, 2025, as a solution to the problem.

Adebayo pointed out that many candidates and their families had to travel considerable distances to test locations, only to experience unanticipated setbacks when he moved the motion in plenary. He demanded that the technical errors be looked at to stop them from happening again.

The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, said that the committee in charge of the inquiry would have the last say on whether or not to formally praise the JAMB Registrar for his conduct.

A voice vote was used to adopt the proposal unanimously.

In order to facilitate access to testing locations, the House further requested the federal government to open computer-based test (CBT) facilities in every local government area (LGA) nationwide.

Give JAMB instructions to make the results of applicants under 16 who had their results previously withheld public.
