2025 UTME Produces Best Results in 12 Years Despite Glitches — JAMB Reveals!

  • More applicants scored more than 300, according to the data.

According to the results of this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), candidates’ performances have significantly improved over the previous 12 years, according to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Candidates who took the test performed better than expected, according to a study of the board’s statistics. The results of applicants who took the UTME retake exam were also made public by the board.

It said that the results of juvenile applicants who performed below the required criteria, participated in “WhatsApp Runs,” and committed other misdemeanors would be made public, with the exception of those who were involved in litigation.

Following a meeting with JAMB’s Chief External Examiners (CEEs) from each state in the federation, the results were made public.

Following the exclusion of isolated good sessions from the impacted centers and the addition of their previously unconfirmed candidates, the board reported that 21,082 of the 336,845 planned candidates were absent.

According to official data made public by Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, 17,025 candidates—or 0.88 percent of the 1,931,467 who took the 2025 UTME—scored 300 or higher.

Since JAMB implemented the computer-based test (CBT) format in 2013, this was the largest number of top scores ever recorded.

Since JAMB implemented the computer-based test (CBT) format in 2013, this was the largest number of top scores ever recorded.

Only 8,401 candidates (0.46 percent) achieved a score of 300 or higher in 2024, compared to 5,318 (0.35 percent) in 2023 and 5,833 (0.34 percent) in 2022. In 2021, just 724 contestants (0.06%) received a score of 300 or above; in 2014 and 2013, none did so.

Additionally, the data showed that all 1,931,467 candidates received their scores in 2025, surpassing the 1,842,364 results that were made public in 2024.

Upon closer examination of the 2025 results, it was discovered that 117,373 candidates (6.08 percent) received a score of 250 or higher. This is a notable rise from the 77,070 (4.18 percent) in 2024 and the 56,736 (3.73 percent) in 2023.

Additionally, 21,368 applicants (1.63 percent) scored 250 and above in 2021, and 65,336 candidates (3.8 percent) earned 250 and above in 2022. This year, 565,988 candidates, or 29.3% of the total, scored 200 or higher; in 2024, 439,961 applicants scored 24%, and in 2023, 355,689 candidates scored 23.36%.

The bulk of the candidates—1,365,479, or 70.7%—still received scores below 200 in 2025 in spite of these improvements. Compared to 76 percent in 2024 and 76.64 percent in 2023, this number indicated a minor improvement.

The variable character of performance patterns was highlighted by a year-over-year comparison.

In 2021, for instance, 188,567 applicants (11 percent) received a score of 200 or above, compared to just 168,650 candidates (13 percent). The figure was 568,847 (34 percent) in 2016.

The statement went on to say, “A subcommittee led by Prof. Olufemi Peters, the Vice Chancellor of the National Open University and the CEE FCT, was established to verify that the results were in order following review of the retake exam report and lengthy discussions on it.

After reviewing the exercise, the CEEs instructed that Prof. Boniface Nworgu, a psychometric expert, be asked to evaluate and approve the results before they were made public.

The meeting decided to provide the withheld results of minor applicants who performed below the set standards as part of the healing process, unless litigation is involved.

However, they had previously made an assurance during the registration procedure, understanding that only those who match the stipulated standards would be considered for underage special admission; therefore, such a result does not qualify them for admission.

Results of Candidates Accused of “WhatsApp Runs” and Other Misdemeanors: It was discovered that this group of candidates had engaged in illegally soliciting help. The meeting emphasized that its decision is a one-time waiver rather than an endorsement of the candidates’ objectionable actions.

Therefore, it was suggested that candidates avoid joining dubious “WhatsApp and other anti-social groups.”
