UTME Glitch: NASFAT, African Universities Stand Firmly Behind JAMB Registrar Oloyede
In light of the recent controversy regarding technical glitches that compromised the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Nasrul-Lahi-l-Fatih Society has offered support to Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
This comes after Oloyede received praise from the Association of African Universities for what it called an extraordinary display of honesty, modesty, and excellent public service.
Oloyede was also defended by Prof. Yusuf Ali, SAN, a distinguished lawyer and the first Kuliya Ngeri of Ilorin Emirate, who called him a man of “uncommon integrity, honesty, and empathy.”
NASFAT acknowledged Prof. Oloyede’s personal suffering and public scrutiny in a statement signed by Imam Abdul-Azeez Onike, its chief missioner. The statement described the episode as an “error of judgment” and did not reflect the registrar’s character or professional conduct.
The organization emphasized that the technical faults that affected the examination findings, whether they were caused by direct acts or subordinates’ oversight, were free of malice or willful carelessness.
“To own up in such circumstances requires strong humility,” it stated. We sincerely pray that Allah, the Most Merciful, heals his heart, restores his dignity, and replaces his suffering with ease and honor. We stand with him and his team during this trying time.
It must be emphasized that there was no malicious intent or willful neglect involved, regardless of whether the occurrence happened as a direct result of direct action or as a result of a subordinate’s oversight, as reported in the media.
“Perfection is a gift from God. Even though it is regrettable, human error is a common occurrence in our world. We must acknowledge that only God is perfect.
Oloyede’s longstanding reputation for honesty, hard work, and a genuine dedication to duty was confirmed by NASFAT.
In a letter signed by Prof. Olusola Oyewole, the Association of African Universities’ secretary-general, the group commented on the situation and commended Oloyede for being open and honest about the system problem that occurred during the administration of the UTME.
Oloyede is a paradigm of excellence, integrity, and transformative governance in the academic and public administration landscape of Africa, according to the association, which represents higher education throughout the continent.
It also conveyed the expectation that other public servants would be motivated to adopt a culture of accountability and openness by his example.
“Prof. Oloyede is one of the very few individuals for whom I can swear with the Holy Quran about their honesty, integrity, transparency, incorruptibility, human empathy, and selflessness,” Ali said in a press release on Friday in support of Oloyede.
Ali claimed that instead of ignoring the event, Oloyede made the uncommon decision for a Nigerian public figure to publicly admit his mistake, take responsibility, and express sincere sympathy for the impacted candidates.
Ali said, “The course he has taken on this regrettable issue, acknowledging that mistakes were made, taking responsibility, and demonstrating true empathy, is a rare occurrence in our part of the world.”
Ali said that demands for Oloyede’s resignation were misplaced and that deserting a ship in the middle of a crisis is a show of cowardice rather than leadership.
In times of crisis, no responsible leader will desert his people; it makes perfect sense for him to stay on board and be strong enough to see the issue through to completion. “It’s not good leadership to take off when bad things happen,” he remarked.
He also praised Oloyede’s unwavering commitment to his job, sharing his firsthand experience of the registrar’s restless nights and protracted travel throughout Nigeria in the months preceding each UTME to guarantee seamless operations.
