2025 UTME: Anambra & Lagos Lead in Exam Malpractice as JAMB Uncovers Fresh Fraud Tactics!

Anambra and Lagos States are the mostequent states of detained suspects in relation to malpractices during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), according to data from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB Registrar, revealed during a press conference in Abuja on Friday that 80 people are presently being investigated by the police for a variety of exam-related offenses.

He emphasized that during the registration and exam procedures, new and more advanced forms of cheating were discovered.

Oloyede stated, “These include identity fraud, biometric manipulation, double registrations, attempts to substitute candidates, and the use of combined thumbprints from candidates and impersonators at registration points.”

With 14 suspects—13 for impersonation and one for a mismatched photograph—Anambra State had the most arrests. Nine defendants from Lagos State were then charged with espionage, illegal cell phone possession, and impersonation.

Other states where notable arrests have occurred include

  • Delta—8 suspects (impersonation),
  • Kano—7 suspects (impersonation and possession of mobile phones),
  • Kaduna—6 suspects (impersonation and mobile phone possession),
  • Rivers—6 suspects (impersonation, mobile phones, calculators),
  • Ebonyi & Enugu—5 suspects each (impersonation).

Prof. Oloyede disclosed that in one extremely uncommon instance, a blind candidate had hired a blind undergraduate to take his place during the test.

The registrar pointed out that “these new forms of malpractice present challenges that require coordinated responses, especially from CBT centers and parents.”

Remember that more than 1.5 million of the 1.9 million candidates who took the 2025 UTME received scores below 200 out of a potential 400, according to the official results that JAMB announced on Friday.

Every applicant took four courses, three of which were related to their chosen field of study and English, which was a required subject.
