UNILAG Launches Emergency Hotlines for Students, Staff
The Quality Assurance and Servicom Unit at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) announced plans to launch 10 emergency hotlines for both students and staff on campus.
Prof. Olufemi Saibu, the unit’s director, shared this information during a news conference on Tuesday, coinciding with the 2025 International Customer Service Week (ICSW) at UNILAG, Akoka, Lagos.
This year’s theme for the ICSW celebration is “Mission Possible”.
Saibu indicated that these hotlines are part of a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing communication within the university during times of emergency.
He mentioned that another feature to be introduced for this year’s ICSW is the Closed User Group (CUG) phone connections for the faculties.
“This initiative is designed to improve communication within the university during emergencies, as well as facilitate interactions between faculties, stakeholders, and the Quality Assurance & SERVICOM Unit.
“This will lead to quicker responses to service issues and establish a more effective feedback and escalation process,” he explained.
Discussing the unit’s recent accomplishments, Saibu stated that efforts had been made to enhance quality and customer experience throughout the university.
He noted that the unit had also maintained improvements in the monitoring of lectures, examinations, and laboratory activities.
“Over the past academic year, we have intensified our commitment to academic excellence through comprehensive monitoring of lectures, exams, and laboratory sessions across all faculties.
“Our regular and random lecture monitoring efforts have resulted in improved punctuality, greater adherence to course outlines, and increased engagement between faculty and students,” he remarked.
He added that the unit conducts pre-lecture monitoring to identify shortfalls in lecture facilities within faculties.
Saibu noted that significant support had come from the university administration and faculties regarding this effort.
“In the past year, we have bolstered our examination monitoring to ensure compliance with university regulations, reduce malpractice, and protect the integrity of our examinations.
“In the recently concluded 2024/2025 second-semester examination monitoring, we oversaw a total of 198 exams across various faculties, marking a notable increase from previous years,” he stated.
The director emphasised that the unit had also improved its supervision of laboratory equipment and apparatus across the university’s various laboratories.
These initiatives, he pointed out, have helped elevate academic standards and ensured that the teaching and learning processes meet the expectations of a world-class institution.
Regarding the celebration of the week, Saibu announced that awards would be presented to outstanding students and staff members for their contributions and performance within the university.
“This year’s ICSW features significant enhancements in the award categories, enabling us to recognise and reward excellence more thoroughly across faculties, departments, and units.
“The total number of awards to be presented at this event is 44, a rise from 34 awards given last year,” the director emphasised.
He mentioned that this reflects a notable advancement in the award category process.
Among the activities planned for the week are an awareness campaign, student enjoyment games and competitions, a stakeholders’ forum, and an awards ceremony.
The ICSW is a worldwide event observed annually during the first week of October.
UNILAG, as part of its dedication to excellence through the Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit, has participated in this celebration since 2019, joining others globally to mark the occasion.
