Taraba Varsity ASUU Demands Entitlements from FG

The Federal University Wukari (FUW) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is demanding the prompt settlement of their accumulated benefits and has rejected the loan scheme proposed by the Federal Government.

This demand was voiced during a protest organized by the union to highlight their dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to uphold long-standing agreements.

Professor Asabe Mercy, the Chairperson of ASUU FUW, led the demonstration and asserted that faculty members deserve better salaries and enhanced welfare, rather than being burdened with debt.

She cautioned that if universities face closures again, Nigerians should hold the government accountable, emphasizing that ASUU will not hesitate to engage in renewed action.

She stated that the union is requesting the disbursement of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), pointing out that the recently allocated ₦50 billion covers less than 10 percent of the total amount owed.

The union also highlighted the lack of revitalization funds and unfavorable working conditions as key reasons for the protest.

In alignment with these points, former ASUU Chairman, Professor Kidzu Oweh, criticized the inadequate pay for lecturers.

He questioned how a professor can manage with a monthly salary of ₦300,000 while politicians are poised to receive salary increases.

Professor Oweh affirmed that ASUU would continue its struggle until the government meets its commitments, stressing that the education sector cannot prosper amid neglect and inadequate measures.
