SSANU Threatens Strike Over Unpaid Salaries at Ondo Varsity
The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a warning about potentially starting an indefinite strike in response to unpaid salaries, outstanding arrears, and unmet requests.
The association indicated that it might align with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has been on strike since August due to similar issues.
ASUU has warned that planned student resumption and the upcoming convocation ceremony could be affected if unpaid funds are not addressed.
On Thursday, Comrade Olutayo Ogungbeni, the Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) at AAUA, accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration of failing to fulfill promises made in June 2025 regarding the settlement of arrears and the increase of subventions to higher education institutions.
Ogungbeni mentioned that SSANU members have not been paid for more than two months, with the last salary received in July.
He also pointed out that the financial support for the university remains inadequate, hindering the full execution of the 2024 National Minimum Wage for university employees.
“The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at AAUA may initiate industrial action if all outstanding salaries are not disbursed. The most recent salary received was in July, and now we are already in October,” he emphasized.
He expressed frustration that staff have been patient for too long and are now prepared for a confrontation, accusing the state government of neglecting the university by not providing sufficient funding.
Ogungbeni outlined SSANU’s demands, which include: payment of 54 months’ arrears from 2019, resolution of 18 months’ arrears related to the 25%/35% salary increase, payment of two months’ arrears concerning the 2024 minimum wage, payment of promotion arrears for the years 2022, 2023, and 2024, and immediate settlement of salaries for August and September 2025.
He remarked that while the ASUU strike has already severely impacted academic operations, a potential SSANU strike would disrupt all administrative and support services at the university if the government does not respond.
Attempts to get a comment from the state government were unsuccessful.
Calls and messages directed to the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, went unanswered by the time of publication.
