“Poor JAMB Results Mirror Nigeria’s Failing Education System” — Peter Obi Laments
Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has voiced his grave concerns over the low scores in the recently announced Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results, claiming that they are a reflection of Nigeria’s failing educational system.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) reports that 1,955,069 applicants took the 2025 UTME. Only over 420,000 of these candidates had a score of 200 or above, and over 1.5 million individuals—or more than 78% of all candidates—did not reach the 200-mark barrier.
Citing years of underinvestment and neglect, Obi said in a statement posted on his verified social media profile that the findings were indicative of serious problems in the country’s education system.
Obi compared Nigeria’s educational results with those of other nations, stating, “These results highlight the consequences of decades of underinvestment in education, a sector that should be central to our national development strategy.” Bangladesh, which once lagged behind Nigeria in virtually every measurable development index, now surpasses us in all key areas, including the Human Development Index (HDI).” He also mentioned Turkey, which has a population of about 87.7 million and more than seven million university students, more than three times Nigeria’s total.
Obi reiterated his position, stressing that education should be seen as a strategic national investment rather than just a social service.
“The most effective means of bringing people out of poverty and the most important factor in a country’s progress is education. We must make significant investments in education at all levels if we are sincere about creating a successful, safe, and just Nigeria,” he stated.
