Ogun NANS Urges Abiodun to Upgrade Tertiary Institutions
The recently elected leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun State Joint Campus Committee, on Thursday urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to prioritize the upgrading of infrastructure and increased funding in all state-owned higher education institutions.
The students’ organization also called for enhanced financial support for the state’s tertiary institutions to foster a conducive learning environment and promote the delivery of high-quality higher education.
Furthermore, the NANS leadership appealed to the governor to revive and expand bursary and scholarship programs for students in the state to alleviate the challenges posed by current economic realities.
Gabriel Francis, the newly elected chairman of NANS Ogun JCC, made these remarks during the inauguration of the new leadership of the association and an educational summit held at the Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences, Ilese-Ijebu, within the Ijebu North-East Local Government Area of the state.
Francis acknowledged Governor Abiodun’s support for the student community and his investments in education, but noted that there are significant gaps that still need to be filled to enhance tertiary education in the state.
He stated, “Our institutions urgently require better infrastructure—modern classrooms, functional laboratories, hostels, libraries, safe learning environments, and reliable transportation systems.”
The student leader emphasized that “these needs are not mere luxuries but essential for meaningful education,” urging the governor and relevant authorities to make infrastructural renewal a priority across state-owned tertiary institutions for the benefit of both current and future students.
Francis also expressed, “We strongly advocate for an increase in the funding allocated to Ogun State tertiary institutions.
“Adequate funding is vital for institutional stability and has a direct impact on the welfare of both staff and students.
“Many campuses struggle with inadequate funding, which affects teaching quality, staff morale, resource availability, and the overall educational experience.
“We earnestly request that the government improve the funding framework to empower our institutions to operate effectively and provide credible support, quality education, and a nurturing environment for all.”
In accordance with national educational standards, NANS also called for the reactivation and expansion of bursary and scholarship programs for all students in the state.
Francis pointed out that, during these challenging economic times, bursaries act as crucial support systems that promote retention, excellence, and stability among students. He urged the government to implement a structured, timely, and transparent bursary system that ensures annual support for every eligible student.
He expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their support, stating that his administration would prioritize accountability, inclusiveness, progressive engagement, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of every student.
In his goodwill message, Adeyemi Ajasa, the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, encouraged Francis and his team to focus on the core mission of the student movement, emphasizing that the survival and relevance of the Ogun JCC relies entirely on its dedication to its members.
Ajasa, who formally congratulated the new chairman and his team, added that “It is crucial for every member to understand the significant difference between commitment and servitude. Let me clarify: loyalty is not the same as foolishness.”
The National Association of Nigerian Students is dedicated to advocating for students’ welfare, campus safety, and government interaction while pushing for improved funding for tertiary education, among other key issues.
