“I Never Said That!” — Minister Denies Plan to Extend NYSC to 2 Years

“Let NYSC provide more opportunities for young Nigerians to create jobs.” “The Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program can be expanded and made more effective with a longer service year,” he stated last week. According to a previous report, the Education Minister suggested extending the NYSC members’ service year to promote job creation and skill development among young Nigerians.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program has never been extended beyond two years, according to Education Minister Tunji Alausa.

Speaking during a visit by Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the new NYSC Director-General, Alausa advocated for a larger NYSC program that would provide young Nigerians with more chances to create jobs.

Since the minister allegedly suggested extending the program by a year, the allegation drove social media into a frenzy over the weekend.

Some Nigerians called for the NYSC program to be discontinued as a result of this incident, which caused uncertainty regarding its future.

The NYSC extension proposal is denied by the minister.

In response to the claims, Alausa explained that his proposal was not an extension of the NYSC service year, but rather the establishment of a unique teaching corps for National Colleges of Education graduates.

He clarified that he was misquoted during a convocation lecture at Lagos State University (LASU) on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

“Now, I never once advocated for extending youth service to two years. He said, “I never said that.”

The minister went on to say that he planned to solve the teacher shortage in rural regions. He emphasized the potential for the NYSC to create a voluntary, optional teacher corps that would deploy educators to underprivileged communities for a two-year period.

“There aren’t enough jobs for the large number of National Colleges of Education graduates that we are training. There are difficulties as a result of this mismatch between supply and demand. There is a shortage of teachers in rural areas in topics like science, math, and English, he continued.

Alausa further said that the government intends to merge certified PTA teachers into the federal civil service and is auditing teachers who work for Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in unity schools.
