NYSC Confirms ₦77K Arrears Payment for Ex-Corps Members— Here’s What You Need to Know

The National Youth Duty Corps (NYSC) Director General, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, has promised that corps members who have just finished their one-year required duty will be compensated for the ₦77,000 monthly stipend that was just instituted.

Speaking on Thursday, April 3, at the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilization Workshop in Abuja, Nafiu affirmed that the enhanced allowance was paid out starting in March after President Bola Tinubu approved and put into effect a new minimum wage structure.

“The administration is aware of its commitment and will deal with the arrears within the allocated budget. We will pay them as soon as the money is made available to us,” Nafiu stated.

The announcement coincides with mounting worries among former corps members who, although serving during the transition period, were afraid they would not be eligible for the new benefits package. However, Nafiu firmly promised that no eligible corps member would be excluded.

“The benefits will extend to individuals who have finished their duty. We have their bank information and will credit them as soon as we obtain the required money. The government is accountable and attentive to the demands of Nigerians, so they shouldn’t be concerned,” he continued.

The move comes after public outrage over the delay in enacting the rise in allowance that was first promised as part of larger initiatives to lessen the financial hardship that young Nigerians were experiencing. Many corps members have complained that the ₦33,000 monthly stipend is insufficient for transportation, food, and rent in large cities due to the skyrocketing cost of living.

The integrity of the mobilization process was the subject of new concerns expressed by NYSC’s Director of Corps Mobilization, Mohammed Abubakar. He disclosed that certain schools still post graduates who are not qualified on the NYSC portal, calling this a serious problem that damages the program’s legitimacy.

“Even though we have made great strides in recent years, we still have significant problems that need to be addressed, especially the fraudulent uploading of unqualified graduates,” Abubakar stated.

His remarks coincide with continued examination of the NYSC database, which has revealed that certain deployed corps members do not meet the legal minimum academic requirements.

Ayodele Olawande, Minister of Youth Development, also spoke to the workshop attendees and urged immediate changes to realign the NYSC with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He underlined that the plan needed to be adjusted to reflect the reality of the Nigerian labor market.

The NYSC needs to change along with Nigeria. “We need to close the gaps and make sure the program gets graduates ready for the workforce,” the minister stated.

In order to address the issues facing the program and set a new direction for the upcoming mobilization cycle, leading government officials, academic representatives, and NYSC coordinators from all around the country convened for the pre-mobilization workshop.
