NECO Opens Recruitment as Exams Go CBT in Nigeria

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has initiated a comprehensive recruitment effort as it prepares to shift from traditional paper-based assessments to Computer-Based Testing (CBT). This transition will begin with the November/December 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, representing a significant advancement in the modernization of Nigeria’s examination framework.

In line with this initiative, NECO is seeking applications from qualified operators to establish computer-based examination centers. The Council has specified that these centers must fulfill strict criteria, including possessing a minimum of 150 functional computers or laptops, with an additional 10 percent reserved as backup. Each computer must feature at least a dual-core Celeron/Pentium processor, 4GB of RAM, a minimum 32GB SSD running Windows 10, and up-to-date web browsers.

Other essential requirements include either 15- or 17-inch monitors, a strong server capable of supporting all connected devices, and dependable power backup systems like a 40 kVA generator and UPS/inverters to maintain operations for at least three hours. Additionally, every center must employ a minimum of two technical support staff and one network engineer to guarantee smooth system operation.

This recruitment effort aims to enhance NECO’s ability to provide reliable, technology-driven assessments across the country. It also aligns with the Federal Government’s directive for a gradual implementation of CBT, starting with objective tests in November 2025 and evolving to include essay-based examinations by the May/June 2026 SSCE.

Officials state that this reform will not only protect examination integrity and diminish malpractice but will also foster opportunities for digital innovation and job creation within the education sector.
