NASU intends to close WAEC offices due to purported infractions.

Due to alleged labor law violations and ongoing worker abuse, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has threatened to close all West African Examinations Council (WAEC) offices across the country.

The union gave its members a seven-day ultimatum, starting yesterday, to organize for nationwide industrial action and start a full-scale, comprehensive strike action starting Monday, March 24, 2025.

Peters Adeyemi, the general secretary of NASU, accused the examination body of unfairly targeting and blatantly suppressing trade unionism during a news conference yesterday in Lagos.

He accused the administration of WAEC of continuing to victimize workers and of not adhering to a legally binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by both parties on March 10, 2025.

Adeyemi brought forward several important points and claimed that WAEC willfully broke the agreement made possible by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment in its internal letter dated March 14.

He said that WAEC purposefully broke the agreement by enforcing an extraneous demand for individual consent that was not included in the agreement. He also claimed that WAEC made a conscious effort to weaken the union and the organization’s disdain for industrial harmony.

NASU demanded that the March 14, 2025 memo be immediately and unconditionally withdrawn, that NASU dues be fully implemented and remitted, that NASU leaders no longer be victimized or transferred illegally, and that WAEC obey labor laws and International Labour Organization (ILO) standards.

Regarding the repercussions of non-compliance, Adeyemi stated that NASU would launch legal action against WAEC for breaking the Trade Union Act and the Labour Act and organize a nationwide strike in all WAEC offices within seven days.

He stated that WAEC needs to immediately stop its illegal activities and abide by the negotiated Memorandum of Understanding. He warned that if they didn’t, there would be a large-scale, protracted industrial action to protect workers’ rights.

He asserts that NASU will not tolerate WAEC’s exploitation of workers and undermining of trade unionism.

NASU intends to close WAEC offices due to purported infractions.
