NAPS Raises Alarm Over Worsening Electricity Crisis in Polytechnic Campuses Nationwide
The growing electrical crisis that is impacting polytechnic campuses and the communities around them in Nigeria has caused the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) to express grave concerns.
Comrade Oyewumi Festus Ayomide, the president of NAPS, released a statement in which the organization bemoaned the fact that extended blackouts and continuous power outages have seriously harmed student welfare and educational quality.
“The enduring issue is not only a nuisance but a hindrance to education, which is supposed to be the cornerstone of the country’s growth and development,” Ayomide said.
After deciding to take the required actions to voice its complaints about the worsening power dynamics, NAPS announced its plan to begin a nonviolent mass demonstration.
The student body held the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) leadership, in particular Engr. AbdulAziz Sule, its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, is directly accountable for what it calls the unresolved shortcomings and duty neglect that resulted in ongoing power outages on campuses.
The association threatened to launch an “unprecedented mass action” against TCN offices across the country unless Engr. Sule resigned by May 1, 2025.
NAPS reaffirmed its dedication to student welfare and stated that the preservation of the nation’s educational system and the improvement of student life on all campuses serve as the foundation for its planned initiatives.
The public was given the association’s word that any protests would be held in a civilized manner, with a great deal of responsibility and deference to the law.
NAPS further emphasized that the moment had come for authorities to acknowledge the vital significance of supplying educational institutions with consistent electricity, noting that this problem goes beyond power supply and touches on matters of national development.
The statement said, “This is a matter of national interest as well as energy supply.” “Students, instructors, and staff all depend on a steady power source for their academic success and productivity.”
In order to further education and protect the future of Nigerian students, NAPS underlined its readiness for constructive communication and cooperation with TCN and expressed optimism for a prompt and favorable response from the appropriate authorities.
