WASSCE Scandal: NANS Urges FG & WAEC to Order Retake of Leaked English Language Exam

The recently held West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), particularly the English Language paper, have caused the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to express serious concerns. It has been widely reported that the paper was compromised and poorly administered, and there have been unsettling reports of candidates staying up late to take the test.

Given that Dr. Amos Dangut, the head of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), publicly acknowledged that the late-night administration of some WASSCE papers did not meet the council’s standards, NANS has strongly denounced the disorganized and unsafe circumstances in which such a crucial test was administered.

“NANS sees this development as a direct threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s education system and a potential disservice to millions of hardworking students across the country,” said Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, Executive Director, Administration and Planning, NANS, National Headquarters. Consequently, we demand the following:

Because it blatantly disregards accepted examination standards and procedures, NANS is adamant that the English language exam that has already been administered be canceled and retaken. The behavior and conditions around the paper are not credible enough for such a critical analysis, and as a result, they cannot be trusted for a reliable evaluation.

“If the English language exam results in widespread failure after all the irregularities, it would be a national embarrassment and a direct insult to the examination body and the country at large.” Any actions that damage WAEC’s or Nigeria’s educational system’s reputation must be avoided. It is unacceptable to condone policy abuse, negligence, and disrespect for established protocols.

“WAEC has to enhance its internal procedures to guarantee the privacy and security of test materials. There must never be another instance of English language exam questions being leaked and circulated before the test. Such errors leave the entire examination open to criticism and suspicion.

“We urge the federal government and the minister of education to order a complete retake of the English language paper and to begin an immediate investigation into the way the test was administered. This is essential for maintaining justice for hardworking students across the country, restoring public trust, and safeguarding academic integrity.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is steadfast in its support of student welfare, academic quality, and openness. We shall not stand by and watch while malpractice and carelessness jeopardize the future of our students and our country.

“WAEC needs to act swiftly to resolve these anomalies and put in place tangible reforms to stop such incidents from happening again. A nationwide student mobilization against this educational injustice could result from ignoring these demands.
