NANS Urges FG to Protect Exam Bodies From Harassment

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the Federal Government to allow examination bodies to carry out their statutory responsibilities without interference, undue pressure or actions that could disrupt the conduct of examinations nationwide.

The appeal follows recent public debates and media reports surrounding engagements between the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education Examination Bodies and agencies under its supervision—developments NANS said have sparked concern across the education sector and among students.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its National President, Comr. Olushola Oladoja, NANS urged all parties involved to exercise restraint, uphold transparency and rely on established institutional procedures in handling issues arising from legislative oversight.

“The National Association of Nigerian Students has observed with deep concern the recent public discussions surrounding the activities of the House Committee on Basic Education Examination Bodies,” the statement read.

While acknowledging the constitutional powers of the National Assembly to oversee public institutions under Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), NANS stressed that such oversight must be carried out responsibly.

“Legislative oversight is a constitutionally recognized function and a vital tool for accountability and good governance,” the association noted.

However, NANS cautioned that oversight processes should not be conducted in ways that undermine institutional stability or create uncertainty for agencies responsible for administering national examinations.

The association also highlighted that most examination bodies are funded largely through fees paid by candidates, warning that disruptions to their operations could directly affect students, especially in the face of current economic pressures.

“Students pay examination fees for clearly defined services, and it is crucial that agencies entrusted with these responsibilities are allowed to operate without unnecessary distractions,” the statement said.

NANS called for constructive engagement among the legislature, the executive arm of government, and examination bodies, urging all concerns to be addressed through proper channels.

Reaffirming its commitment to dialogue and accountability, the association said it would continue to monitor developments and engage relevant authorities through lawful and democratic means to protect students’ interests.

“Oversight should strengthen institutions and ultimately serve the public good,” NANS added.
