NANS Slams Early Morning UTME Schedule—Calls for Urgent Review by JAMB!
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) was scheduled by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which put students in danger by setting exam times as early as 6.30 a.m. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned this decision.
The student body stated the decision is hazardous and disrespectful, especially in light of the nation’s current security issues.
In a statement they approved on Sunday, the body was represented by Comrade Olushola Oladoja, the National President, and Comrade Samson Ajasa Adeyemi, the National Public Relations Officer.
“It is extremely concerning that students are expected to commute to exam centers early in the morning, frequently taking dangerous routes and encountering transportation challenges. Reports suggest that some candidates have been forced to travel long distances, putting them at unnecessary risk.
The current security situation in Nigeria requires that authorities put students’ safety and well-being ahead of putting them through unnecessary hardship. NANS calls on JAMB to immediately review and modify the examination schedule to ensure that no student is required to sit for an exam before 9 a.m. We urge the Honourable Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, to step in and make sure that students are not put in danger as a result of inadequate planning.
“We hereby give JAMB a seventy-two-hour ultimatum to update the UTME timetable and take a more student-friendly stance. NANS will be forced to organize students around the country for nonviolent demonstrations to demand prompt action if they don’t cooperate.
“Nigerian kids’ safety and well-being must never be jeopardized.
“NANS is steadfast in its support of laws that safeguard students and guarantee that preventable obstacles do not impede their academic endeavors.”
