Kebbi Refutes NECO Ranking, Explains WAEC Switch

The Kebbi State Government has denounced as erroneous and misleading a report suggesting that the state placed last (37th) in the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) performance evaluation.

In a statement issued over the weekend, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr. Halima M. Bande, stated that the report was crafted with ill intent and aimed at undermining the genuine reforms being made in the education sector under the leadership of Governor Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu.

Bande clarified that Kebbi State has not been funding public school students to take the NECO examinations since 2022, choosing instead to support the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) as its preferred examination body.

“For the last four years, public schools in Kebbi State have not participated in NECO examinations. Thus, any effort to rank Kebbi in NECO 2025 is unfounded and lacks substance,” she remarked.

The commissioner pointed out that only a small number of private schools in the state continue to enroll their students for NECO, emphasizing that their limited results cannot accurately reflect the overall performance of the state’s education system.

“The methodology used to rank Kebbi State last is incorrect, flawed, and cannot be upheld. Since our public schools did not partake in NECO, no valid comparison can be drawn,” Bande asserted.

She also highlighted Governor Idris’s background as a teacher, unionist, and education advocate, noting that he has prioritized education in his administration. She stated that the reforms, investments, and policies introduced during his tenure are already making a difference in schools throughout the state.

“The claim that Kebbi State finished last in NECO 2025 is incorrect, unverified, and lacks factual support. The public should ignore such falsehoods,” she remarked.

Bande confirmed that Governor Idris remains dedicated to enhancing the education sector in Kebbi State, insisting that the advancements made during his leadership are evident, quantifiable, and impactful.
