JAMB Warns Schools: Stop Forcing Candidates to Switch Courses

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has sent a clear warning to higher education institutions involved in unethical practices that threaten the merit-based admission system on its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

In a statement by Fabian Benjamin, the Head of Media and Public Relations for the Board, JAMB revealed it has received reports that some institutions are pressuring eligible candidates, especially those highly ranked on CAPS, to switch from their preferred programs to those with fewer applicants.

The Board stated that this practice aims to create space for preferred candidates of the institutions, compromising the fairness, transparency, and integrity of the admissions process.

“The Board wants to remind all candidates and institutions that admission processes in Nigeria are conducted solely through CAPS, which was designed to ensure accountability, transparency, and equal opportunities in admission placements,” the statement said.

JAMB described any program change or admission activity outside CAPS as unauthorized, unethical, and harmful to the candidates involved. It warned that such misleading “backdoor moves” will not be accepted.

As a result, the Board urged candidates to reject any requests or invitations from institutions asking them to change their programs through internal portals or unofficial methods.

It also clarified that any program change that later appears on CAPS after a candidate has been persuaded by an institution will be seen as voluntary, and the Board will not be responsible for the results.

Initial investigations by JAMB have indicated that a university in the South-West and another in Abuja have engaged in these unethical actions. The Board announced that it has begun appropriate regulatory measures to address these violations and protect candidates’ interests.

JAMB reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all qualified candidates receive fair, equal, and transparent treatment throughout the admissions process for 2025 and beyond.

It encouraged candidates to remain vigilant and perform all admission-related tasks exclusively through the JAMB CAPS portal.
