JAMB Warns Newly Established Institutions: Stop Illegal Admissions or Face Sanctions!

Newly created, improved, and adopted postsecondary institutions have received a strong warning from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) not to engage in unlawful admissions, emphasizing that regularization will not be permitted.

JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede stressed that all admissions must go via the Central Admissions Processing System and rigorously adhere to due process during an interactive session with the principal officers of the impacted schools on Monday in Abuja.

“CAPS guarantees honesty, equity, and openness in admissions. Any school trying to get around this platform runs the risk of having those admissions revoked, Oloyede stated.

He demanded that the admissions processes be fully followed by the more than 80 newly accredited colleges by the federal government.

The registrar clarified that the Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System, which was adopted in 2018, enables clear communication and program eligibility checks, while CAPS, which was introduced in 2017, automates and standardizes the admissions process.

He claims that both platforms—which have now been enhanced with institutional mail services—are the only official means of communication for JAMB.

Citing the approval of 22 new universities, 33 new polytechnics and mono-technics, and 12 new colleges of education nationwide between late 2024 and 2025, the JAMB chief praised the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, for its dedication to increasing access to tertiary education.

Although CAPS and IBASS accounts had been made for these schools, he pointed out that only programs approved by the National Commission for Colleges of Education, the National Board for Technical Education, and the National Universities Commission would be active.

Oloyede also went over the correct processes for onboarding applicants, emphasizing that organizations need to designate certain officials to oversee CAPS and IBASS access.

“Jambo will offer complete technological assistance, but compliance cannot be compromised. Shortcuts must be avoided by institutions. He continued, “There is no excuse for admitting students through the back backdoor.

After the seminar, the institutions were introduced to the functioning procedures of the CAPS and IBASS systems through a live demonstration.

Speaking as well, Prof. William Qurix, the vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, stated that the purpose of the conference was to familiarize heads of institutions with the functions and activities of CAPS and IBAS, which allow the institutions to contact and engage with JAMB.

According to Qurix, some applicants had previously enrolled for JAMB before some recently sanctioned or founded polytechnics or universities.

Typically, he said, these kinds of schools would have trouble recruiting candidates.

He stated, “But this process has been cleared for us, and we are quite enlightened. JAMB gave us assurances of prompt response to any inquiries that might come from the heads of institutions through their CAPS or IBAS system. So definitely this meeting has enlightened us, and it will have a great impact.” Prior to this, Dr. Uche Uba, the Ministry of Education’s Director of Colleges, had mentioned that the National Universities Commission had set some criteria that the new institutions had to adhere to. Uba encouraged the education colleges to upgrade to dual mode in order to meet with NUC officials and become familiar with the criteria.

Therefore, I urge the educational institutions to make an effort to meet with them. Only seven out of fifteen reported to NUC the last time we called them. It’s really, really important, please. Additionally, NUC needs to verify its resources. Because you’re standing by yourself now. That’s not the one you did previously,” she remarked.

Prof. Paulinus Okwelle, the Executive Secretary of NCCE, praised JAMB for its efforts to provide a smooth admissions procedure for universities.

When students register for university admission, take the graduate test, and are accepted to continue their education, JAMB has added state-of-the-art technology and creative ways. “The things they are implementing are really simple,” he stated.
